Scary School

Scary School - Derek The Ghost, Scott M. Fischer Despite its name Scary School really isn’t that scary. It’s actually pretty funny. Other reviews have likened the book to the Wayside School books by Louis Sachar or the Black Lagoon series by Mike Thaler. I have to completely agree. From the moment I started reading, I knew the books kind of reminded me of something and that was it!I liked the framing of the story. More or less each chapter is about a new character that Derek introduces. While that’s going on, there is the much larger story of the school year and the preparation for the Ghoul Games. In doing so, it kept the pace moving smoothly. Everything just keeps building.I might have lied when I said the book is pretty funny. It’s actually very funny. How can it not be when you got: a girl named Frank (you pronounce it “Rachel”), Peter the Wolf (who is a either a werewolf or a boy depending on how his mood is at that moment), and a T Rex that runs detention (you better be on your best behavior)? There are too many hilarious things about the book for me to mention in a quick review.I really appreciated that the book was good for all ages. Obviously, the kids are going to like it. It’s completely silly, a little gross but an overall good book for elementary/middle school kids. The author was able to keep everything ‘in check’ (so to speak) so that parents/teachers/older siblings/etc could enjoy the book as well. I never felt alienated as a reader like he was only trying to appeal to the kids. The author took good care to make the book fun for adults as well which is always appreciated. The bottom line? It’s a hilarious book for everyone.*Received from author in exchange for an honest review
